The ferry departs from the Protection Island (pub) side every hour on the hour and does one trip per hour. The ferry capacity is 34 passengers. If more than 34 travelers arrive for a given sailing, the ferry does a second trip within that hour. After the backlog of passengers has been cleared, the ferry resumes it’s normal one trip per hour schedule. The last ferry each night coincides with the pub hours. Beginning June 1st, 2005 until Labour Day, the last ferry of the night, Monday through Saturday leaves from the pub at 11pm. The last ferry on Sunday night departs from the pub at 10pm. That’s all year round for the last Sunday night crossing.
Boat Information:
The ferry boats are converted life boats that formerly served on the Queen of the North. They are each 30 feet long with a 9 foot 9 inch beam and seat 34 passengers. They draw 23 inches and are currently powered by 3 cylinder Perkins diesels. The boats are fully enclosable with roll down clear vinyl curtains. The ferry boats are inspected yearly and are certified by Transport Canada, Marine Safety. The ferry boats have a roof mounted bicycle rack. There is a charge of $2.00 (one way) for each bike.
Skippers:
Specially trained skippers guide you across the Nanaimo Harbour; they are D.J., Keith, Rob, Bruce and Dave.
